About Solbari Reviews

After launching their skin care line in February last year, the Melbourne based brand’s goal is to nourish and protect skin against the harsh effects of the Australian sun with products that function as personal (sol)ar (bari)ers. This includes a range of UVA/B protective clothing, accessories, swimwear and sunscreen, and an app, SkinVision, where users can log their freckles and moles and have them assessed for skin cancer.

Pros

  • Quick absorbing
  • Light weight
  • Non greasy or sticky
  • Quick acting
  • Suitable for extremely sensitive skin (including children and those with skin conditions like eczema, rosacea and psoriasis)
  • Dermatologically approved

Cons

It is on the pricier side for a moisturiser at $70.00 for 75ml; however, as it is so effective and eliminates the need for multiple single solution products, the overall cost of a skincare routine including it could lessen with time.

How to use it?

The Calming Cream moisturiser is formulated to be used in tandem with an spf daily.

It works best when applied to clean, dry skin as the last (or only) step in your skin care routine. The moisturiser is packaged in a vacuum sealed container with an innovative push pump dispenser that prevents air and pollutants from destabilising the formula. We find only half a pump is necessary to cover the face and neck.

The star ingredients that make these moisturisers special

Allantoin

A naturally derived liquid extracted from Comfrey plant roots that aids in wound healing by quickly repairing the skin’s moisture barrier. It does this by:

  • Acting as an emollient (a protective filmy layer that moisturises and sits on top of the skin)
  • Boosting the amount of water the skin is able to absorb
  • Encouraging gentle exfoliation and speeding up skin cell turnover
  • Increasing the skin’s tolerance of active ingredients
  • Soothing redness, irritation and inflammation
  • Stimulates collagen production

Colloidal Oatmeal

A powdered form of oatmeal suspended in liquid that works to:

  • Absorb and and provide protection against UV rays
  • Gently cleanse the skin
  • Rebalance the skin’s pH as it can be abnormally high for individuals with dry, sensitive skin
  • Reduce and soothe redness, irritation, inflammation and the likelihood of fungal infections common amongst those with sensitive skin
  • Stimulate beta-glucans, the skin’s immune boosting cells
  • Strengthen the skin’s moisture barrier by limiting water loss within deeper epidermal layers.

Panthenol

Sometimes listed as vitamin B5, Panthenol is a powerful humectant (a compound that attracts and binds to water) and emollient that:

  • Improves elasticity and moisture retention by absorbing deep into all layers of the skin.
  • Soothes UV induced redness, inflammation, and itchiness
  • Speeds up minor wound healing like cracked, scaly, or burned skin
  • Strengthens the skin’s moisture barrier by stimulating ceramides (the cells that keep the barrier in tact and flexible)

Synthetic Ceramides

Just like the body’s natural Ceramides, Synthetic Ceramides help keep the moisture barrier strong, flexible and less sensitive. If we imagine our skin as a brick wall, the individual skin cells act like bricks while ceramides function as the cement holding the wall together. Synthetic Ceramides also:

  • Allow moisture to penetrate the skin but limit its ability to leave
  • Increases the skin’s tolerance of active ingredients
  • Lessens the inflammation and irritation caused by conditions like acne, eczema, psoriasis and rosacea
  • Prevent pollutants and UV rays from penetrating the skin
  • Soothes and smoothes dry, flakey skin

Our verdict

After using Solbari Sensitive Skin Calming Cream every day for two weeks, our resident dry skinned editorial assistant, Allie is obsessed. The fragrance-free formula absorbs quickly, sits well under makeup and leaves skin feeling hydrated, bouncy and most importantly – not irritated. It has limited the dry, flaky flare-ups that usually occur with the start of the colder months and works so well it’s the new star of her skin care routine.

9/10
