Alicia Vikander is a Swedish actress who first gained praise for her role as Caroline Matilda in A Royal Affair in 2012. She is also known for her breakthrough role as Ava in Ex Machina in 2014. However, it wasn’t until her Oscar win for her portrayal of Gerda in The Danish Girl that she really became recognised. In 2018, she made headlines again when Tomb Raider, where she was cast as Lara Croft, was released.

This was the role that took her career to a new level by making her an action star. A feature on video games in slots by Foxy Games calls Lara Croft one of the most instantly recognisable characters in pop culture, since she first appeared in the 1994 Tomb Raider video games. Lara Croft is also considered one of the pioneering lead female characters, with three Hollywood adaptations and a fourth in the pipeline. The latest Tomb Raider movie starring Vikander is actually a reboot of the 2001 and 2003 franchises that starred Angelina Jolie. Taking the baton from such a famous actress wasn’t easy, but Vikander took on the challenge of preparing for the physically demanding role.

Alicia Vikander beauty routine

Alicia Vikander beauty routine adopts a minimalist style.

Her daily makeup routine involves only moisturiser and eyebrow pencil. In fact, she describes herself as one of those people who will put cream on their face four times a day. She even points out that she takes any opportunity to moisturise her skin with Charlotte’s Magic Cream moisturiser. She also loves to pop a facemask from the airport before a flight and leave it on overnight. Sometimes, she also goes for a bit of eyeliner, mascara, and highlighter. She also uses a ‘defence skin ointment’ called Hudsalva for her skin and lips.

Vikander emphasises that beauty isn’t just about products. It’s also about having a routine, such as having regular sleep times. Diet and exercise are very important as well. And it’s her commitment to months of the much-sought-after Magnus Method that allowed her to get the physique and strength needed to play Lara Croft.

The Magnus Method was developed by Magnus Lygdbäck, a Swedish personal trainer and nutritionist that helped other Hollywood stars get into shape — including Gal Gadot for Wonder Woman and Ben Affleck for Justice League. It might be surprising to know that this particular method has what’s called a 17/20 system for dieting, which doesn’t have extreme restrictions such as forbidden foods. And instead of counting calories, meals are portioned in fistfuls.

The nutrition routine is key to building muscle. The 17/20 system is called as such because 17 out of 20 meals should be ‘on point.’ This means all dairy, sugar, and processed foods are cut out. Instead, meals should be made up of good protein, good fats, and slow carbs. Then the remaining 3 meals are ‘cheat meals.’

Meanwhile, Vikander’s workouts consisted of HIIT and strength weights training to get Lara Croft’s strong, lean physique. Among the exercises in her program are assault bikes, lunges, goblet squats, dumbbell flys, and ice skaters. Vikander was in the gym seven days a week, and Lygdbäck mentions how he sometimes had to force her to take a day off to recover.

Months of the Magnus Method allowed Vikander to pack some 12 to 16 pounds of pure muscle, and enabled her to perform acrobatic stunts — including free climbing in caves and diving off of boats. Vikander’s background as a former Royal Swedish Ballet dancer gave her the discipline to follow Lygdbäck.

The method is no doubt challenging, however you would be able to pull it off as well if you wanted to. As holistic expert nutritionist Jessica Sepel says, balance is important when doing a new routine. And you should also view the routine as a lifestyle choice rather than a quick fix.
