It’s not a secret that we are currently living in such uncertain circumstances thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, so a bit of mood-boost feels more important than ever before.

During 2020 we learned so many things, from how to take time for ourselves, read more books, press the pause button to feel present, exercise more, and enjoy the little pleasures of life, but what are the tips we should actually keep in mind to boost our moods?

To dig us out there, we asked psychologist Sabina Read to share five tips to make us feel better and happier. You’re welcome.

How to Improve your mood in 5 tips

1. Get outside

Fresh air and connecting to nature can help to reduce stress levels and rejuvenate your mind and body. Research has shown Aussies are now waking up two hours earlier on average, meaning we have the choice to spend more time on our wellbeing. With the extra time, we are gaining in our days, I recommend getting outside in the morning to increase exposure to sunlight which is a natural mood booster while practising simple acts of mindfulness and gratitude for our surroundings.

2. Take Care Of Your Body And Face

Taking care of your body and skin can also positively impact your mood. You can find offers for monthly custom facials at facial membership, tailored to your skin’s unique needs. Our virtual consultations with our experienced estheticians will guide you on how to properly take care of your skin and recommend the best products for your specific concerns. These monthly facials will not only make you feel pampered but also provide long-term benefits for your mental health. Your body is also an important factor in taking care of your mental health, go out for a run or walk, stretch, and do yoga. Exercise helps to release endorphins which can improve your mood and overall well-being. Plus, you’ll feel great knowing that you’re taking care of yourself both inside and out.

3. Wake up earlier

Setting your alarm slightly earlier than normal is a great way to set up your day and enhance your mood. By rising early, you’re more likely to increase your productivity and get more out of the day. This can go a long way in enhancing your motivational levels, and also gives you more ‘me’ time during the day to reflect on what really matters. I’ve observed that people who rise early often feel a greater sense of accomplishment by day’s end, hopefully reducing the need to cram tasks late into the night which can set up unhelpful sleep patterns.

4. Spend quality time with loved ones in the morning

Spending time with the people we love, be it family, friends, or even a furry companion, is a great way to boost your mood first thing in the morning. New research from Kellogg revealed 69% of Aussies feel their morning is brightened by connecting with their loved ones and almost one in three (30%) Aussies feel their morning is brightened by waking up to happy family members. For 2021, make sure you take the time to sit down and connect – be it over a bowl of cereal, on the couch, or walking side by side with your fur-friend to help brighten up your day.

5. Start your day right with a balanced breakfast

It’s no surprise that when you start your day with a balanced breakfast, you’re setting yourself up with energy to get through the day. It also means you’re less likely to get ‘hangry’ before lunch and helps to balance your mood.

6. Put your device down

2020 marked the year of the virtual meetings, calls and catchups, signaling a shift in people wanting to put their devices down, and nurture face-to-face communication towards the end of the year. Although 64% of the nation admit to multitasking while eating breakfast, including using their smartphone (52%), checking social media (48%) and reading the latest news (33%), it’s important to ensure we’re getting that face-to-face communication time, as connection and a sense of belonging goes a long way in improving our moods. When you go to mindlessly grab your device, opt for real-time experiences instead.
