The jewelry we wear is deeply personal, often inherited, or gifted it tends to mark a special or symbolic moment. Then it’s natural when wedding jewelry is involved, to want to ensure the recipient will love it, and not only that but also wear it forever. A few things to consider prior to making the big decision: Timelessness, and versatility, the two main key selling points if you look at this Australian creative range.

Holly Ryan will be launching a bespoke wedding jewelry and engagement service as well as releasing a bridal edit online this year. She says herself that a wedding range was inevitably the next step on her brand as she has been making wedding jewelry for her friends and clients almost since her brand began ten years ago. Below we asked Holly how she first got into the creative sphere to the wedding scenario.

Q&A with Holly Ryan, Founder of Holly Ryan Jewellery

Q

Tell us a little about yourself and Holly Ryan as a brand

My name is Holly, I am a 31-year-old jewelry maker and sculpture artist committed to producing responsible and meaningful objects that make others happy, inspired, or empowered.

Q

What makes your brand so unique?

Art and nature-driven modern heirlooms created consciously and passionately by a team of skilled artisans.

Q

What experience can customers expect when owning one of your designs?

The assurance that they know where it was made, the person who made it, what materials it was made from, that it was made responsibly and sustainably from recycled and ethically sourced materials, and that if they ever wish to customize the piece, have it repaired, redesigned or trade it in to be recycled for a store credit they know exactly where to come to do just that.

Q

You’ve always been in the creative sphere, what drew you to this world?

My upbringing was a very creative one, and always close to nature. My parents studied silversmithing in Mexico in the ’80s and so I grew up at mums silver jewelry market stalls and rather than kindergarten my parents send me to ‘playgroups’, each playgroup we did something creative, be it
candle making, potato printing fabrics, painting, potting plants or baking, etc. And my dad taught me to surf and always took me bushwalking so I think that making jewelry responsibly and sustainably is truly the sum part of my upbringing.

Q

As Marilyn Monroe used to sing, are diamonds really a girl’s best friend?

I was always more of a Sapphire girl, to be honest, however, I recently released my first wedding and engagement collection and have completely fallen in love with diamonds and have now switched my sapphires out for diamonds. They are truly mesmerizing.

Q

We love the Holly Ryan Collections, how do you get inspired to create new designs?

My jewelry is always art or nature-driven and I find my inspiration in everyday things and feelings, a beautiful sunrise, a crashing wave, a cool afternoon breeze, sentimental words from a loved one, or a visit to the art gallery.

Q

Top advice for our CF readers on choosing wedding jewelry/ engagement ring?

I always advise choosing 18ct gold and to do your research to ensure your stones are conflict-free. I also truly believe you should meet the maker. Working directly with a jeweler is the most beautiful experience, you become a part of the process in creating something so incredibly special that you will wear forever and that will someday become a family heirloom.

Q

What’s next for you and your brand?

I just opened the doors to my first showroom, workshop, and head office in Surry Hills and so my focus right now is nurturing this space and my team to make it the best it can be.

Q

Where is the first place you’ll travel overseas when restrictions will be lifted?

Italy, always Italy. The food, the wine, the culture, the history, the architecture, the fashion, the craftsmanship, and the skilled artisans will forever inspire me.
