No matter your shape or style, a silk shirt is always a winner when it comes to looking and feeling your best. Not only is this staple piece incredibly versatile (it can take you from day to night with ease), but it can also be dressed up or down with just a few simple tweaks.

Thanks to its temperature-regulating and antimicrobial properties, silk is also the ideal fabric to wear in the winter months, as it’ll keep you warm without overheating, and it always looks chic – not frumpy. Not sure how to style your silk shirts for the colder weather? Sophie Doyle, The Fable founder, shared with us her seven tips and silk shirt outfit ideas to try.

1. Pair it with tailored plants

For a more relaxed daytime vibe, style your silk shirt with a pair of high-waisted jeans and complete the look with some comfortable sneakers or loafers. To elevate the look, swap your jeans for a pair of tailored trousers and flats for heeled boots. Linen or wool trousers in a neutral beige or charcoal grey will help your outfit look polished and highlight the sheen of your silk.

2. Tuck it in

Whether you’re wearing pants or an A-line skirt, always gently tuck your silk shirt into the front. For pants, leave the back loose for a stylish drape, and for skirts, tuck it all the way around to help cinch in your waist and create a more feminine look.

3. Don’t be scared of layers

If you’re needing a bit more warmth throughout the day, layer your silk shirt with a sweater to create a luxe textural contrast, and go for a bright pop of colour if you’re wanting to make a statement. A chunky knit or soft cashmere sweater will create a more refined look, but a cardigan or denim jacket can make it more fun, too.

4. Add a blazer or coat

A structured blazer will add sophistication and complement your silk shirt during the day, while a long coat can help elevate the look for night’s out and help create a sleek silhouette. As for what to wear on the bottom, you can’t go past tight black jeans, tailored trousers, or a pencil skirt and heels to complete this day-to-night ensemble.

5. Go for jewel tones

Black on black may be your go-to winter palette, but classic white and navy can also help an outfit pop. For a real statement in winter, though, go for jewel tones such as emerald green, burgundy or sapphire blue.

6. Remember to accessorise

Once you have your outfit sorted, don’t forget to add the finishing touches with accessories. It could be a belt to cinch in your waist and add definition, a chic beret, a pair of leather gloves or a patterned or neutral scarf. Ankle boots are always a practical option in winter, too. If you’re heading out after work, make use of fun jewellery, like layering fine gold necklaces, to help elevate your silk shirt.

7. Play around with patterns

If your winter coats and trousers are on the neutral side, use your silk shirt to add a point of difference. Polka dots and classic stripes always look chic. Alternatively, if you’re working with a more classic silk colour, pair it with a houndstooth or plaid for a winter-proof look.
