While rows of tubs, tubes and pipette topped bottles of skincare make for a very aesthetic vanity, their effects on our skin can be a little less predictable. Especially as even the most hardworking formulas can become ineffective or even harmful when stored in insufficient packaging.

If, like me, you’ve ever stopped mid skincare routine to wonder if your serum was always that colour, why your favourite oil is suddenly causing breakouts, or why the moisturiser you’ve been using for months has a new texture – your skincare packaging could be the answer. This is because most targeted skincare products contain active ingredients requiring very specific conditions to remain stable, and unfortunately, a lot of packaging isn’t able to maintain this stability after opening.

The Importance Of Packaging For Beauty Products

Skincare Packaging

Exposure to light, oxygen and bacteria can cause active ingredients to degrade, oxidise and become contaminated. This can result in changes to the formula’s smell, colour, feel, and most importantly, its effect on the skin. Though some products can remain relatively stable if kept away from these stressors, they often contain preservative ingredients and petrochemicals that can be harmful when absorbed.

It is with all of this in mind that Dr. Garry Cussell, Clinical Director of Rejuvenation Clinics of Australia created Rejuvaus Skincare, a range made with only the most powerful, proven ingredients, packaged in airless, lightproof bottles.

Over the course of his 45-year career in cosmetic medicine, Dr. Cussell has garnered a reputation for helping his clients achieve incredible, youthful looking skin through high performance in-clinic treatments. To help create and maintain fantastic results at home, Dr. Cussell and his team spent nearly a decade perfecting Rejuvaus Skincare’s packaging and formulations.

Due to the advanced nature of the brand’s signature rose gold packaging, Rejuvaus products can contain a variety of ultra concentrated active ingredients like encapsulated retinaldehyde and Kakadu plum while remaining stable, effective and non-irritating. All Rejuvaus formulas are also vegan, cruelty free and fully recyclable.

To learn more about the Rejuvaus range and why packaging can make or break a product’s success, read on for our discussion with Dr. Garry Cussell:

Is skincare packaging really so important?

Packaging is important not only for presentation but most importantly for maintaining the integrity and effectiveness of the ingredients. All active skincare bottles should be sealed off from exposure to light and air to remain effective. Open exposure not only allows in air but also allows microbes from the air and from fingers touching the ingredients.

When the ingredients become oxidised, the serum or cream becomes darker or brownish in the bottle. Within a few days or weeks of being opened, it has obviously lost much of its effectiveness! So, we strongly suggest only buying skincare from bottles only if they come in lightproof and airless containers with airless pumps. Avoid opening lids or dropper bottles.

What makes Rejuvaus’ packaging and formulas unique?

Rejuvaus’ sustainable packaging consists of:

  • Recyclable hard plastic bottles, with separate recyclable inner bottles (that are refillable). These are completely airless and light proof.
  • All serums and creams are filled to the top of the inner bottle to prevent an air gap.
  • They all dispense using an airless pumping mechanism.
  • They dispense from a tiny ‘micro-nozzle’ that accurately dispenses only a minimum amount of just 0.2ml.
  • The serums and creams are very spreadable and as the ingredients are very pure, active and concentrated, 1 pump is all that is required to cover the face, eyelids and neck and chest.
  • The ingredients being well stored only require the legal minimum amount of preservatives. We are legally required to put some preservatives in all products, and Rejuvaus uses a small amount, (0.2%) of lemongrass only, as it’s natural preservative. This is also the only natural fragrance. There are no synthetic or essential oil fragrances that can cause sensitivity or allergic reactions.
  • There are no petrochemical preservatives, which are obviously also harmful to the skin and often absorbed systemically into our bodies.

As someone seeing a wide range of skin types and personal routines each day, are you able to notice any differences in the skin health of those using actives with airtight and lightproof skincare packaging vs. droppers or jars?

Most skincare products do not contain many active ingredients and therefore do not really produce much real skin complexion change.

We had been recommending many so-called cosmeceutical skincare ranges for many years and found few to have much clinical, lasting effect in improving skin complexion. This is why were driven to produce the Rejuvaus products, with their many active ingredients all combined synergistically to remain pure, active, long lasting and optimal improvement in skin health.

Apart from the normal emollient moisturisers, ingredients that effect real change are the antioxidants, pigment regulators, exfoliants, epidermal growth factors and collagen peptides, hyaluronic acids, anti-inflammatory ingredients and pre, pro and postbiotics. Of these, the antioxidants, pigment regulators, epidermal growth factors, collagen peptides and hyaluronic acids need to be deeply absorbed to maximise their efficacy. Many ranges of skincare have so many fillers and skin occlusive blockers, that the penetration is limited.

Each bottle of Rejuvaus serum or cream contains multiple ingredients (19 – 33) comprising all of these active categories or classes of action. They are all protected in lightproof and airless bottles to maintain their activity and purity. If the ingredients are maintained in an airless and lightproof container without exposure to air and microbes, it should maintain its colour and natural fragrance and remain stable and active until the bottle is finished. Furthermore, this prevents the need for artificial, synthetic or petrochemical preservatives, which are obviously also harmful to the skin and often absorbed systemically into our bodies.

Once again, all Rejuvaus serums and creams contain the richest source and most active and most deeply penetrating form of the most natural ingredients, in extremely stable, effective formulations and protected in airless and lightproof bottles, with no blocking fillers.
