Double cleansing is one of the best Korean beauty secrets to having perfect skin. Using oil-based and water-based products at least once a day helps clean the skin, remove dead cells, and improve skin texture, increasing the effectiveness of creams applied afterwards.

Everything You Need To Know About Double Cleansing

What Is Double Cleansing?

As the name says, it’s all about using two cleansing products instead of one. It must be first an oil-based cleanser designed to remove oil-based impurities, such as makeup, sunscreen, etc… We love, Alpha-H Melting Moment Cleansing Balm with Wild Orange Leaf Extract, this bad boy is one of our favourites in the beauty team as it melts beautifully into an oil, leaving the skin free of any impurities or makeup. The citrus smell is a bonus point for us, plus it repairs and strengthens the skin’s natural pH balance.  The formula is suitable for all skin types and rich in essential fatty acids.

Then, it’s time to go for the second step; once your skin is clean of all the oil-based impurities, then the second water-based cleanser can really work its way into the skin. A water-based cleanser lifts away the rest of the impurities.

Double cleansing isn’t necessary, but certain skin types may find it more worthwhile than others, and we have seen great results in the past year making it the number one favourite cleansing treatment for Korean women. Also, people who suffer from acne should add this to their routine as it will help remove the bacteria that can lead to breakouts.

Experts recommend doubling cleanse the skin every day at night, even though you have not worn makeup during the day. Furthermore, it’s great to prevent wrinkles and fines lines, just enough reasons to start to add it into your skincare routine right away, right?

How To Double Cleanse For Healthy Skin

  1. Apply cleansing oil/balm to your palm, and use your fingers to gently massage into your dry face.
  2. Massage gently in circular motions for around a minute.
  3. Use a washcloth and lukewarm water to remove the cleansing oil or balm and avoid dehydration.
  4. Keep your skin damp and apply the water-based cleansing formula.
  5. Massage gently again in circular motions.
  6. Rinse off with lukewarm water.

The Cleansers You Choose All Depend On Your Skin Type

Normal Skin

If you are the lucky one with normal skin, and you don’t worry about a particular concern, you can go for creamy or moisturing formulas such as Angela Caglia Anti Pollution Cleansing Oil, Emma LewishamIlluminating Oil Cleanser or Medik8 Lipid-Balance Cleansing Oil.

Dry or Sensitive skin

If you have dry or sensitive skin, try to look for a neutral pH level cleanser that helps ensure skin isn’t dried out further. Also, ingredients such as jojoba oil and shea butter are great for this type of skin.

Some of our favourites cleansers for dry and sensitive skin are: Avène Xeracalm Cleansing Oil, QED Skincare Lite Protect No Rinse Cleanser, and Gallinée Foaming Face Cleanser.

Oily or Acne-prone skin

If you in the acne-prone side, try to stick to lightweight formulas and avoid rich ingredients. Pay attention to the list of ingredients and go for the product that contains anti-inflammatory ingredients such as vitamin E and glycolic acid or lactic acid.

Some of our favourites cleanser for oily and acne prone skin are: The Ordinary Supersize Squalane Cleanser, Kate Somerville ExfoliKate Cleanser, and PAULA’S CHOICE Omega Complex Cleansing Balm.

Combination Skin

If you have combo skin, try to find a cleanser rich, oil-based that contains moisturising ceramides, followed by a gel or foaming cleanser.

Some of our favourites cleanser for Combination skin are: Vela Days Lipid Complex CannaComplex® Cleansing Balm, Clarins Gentle Foaming Purifying Cleanser, BIOSSANCE Squalane + Amino Aloe Gentle Cleanser.

Conclusion

Consistency is key, whether that’s the formula of your cleansers or the technique you use. If you don’t want to bother is better to stick with one cleanser than nothing. Remember to be gentle and take your time as a me-moment to do it properly.
