Australian Fashion Week might be over for another year, but we have a hunch that some of the runways’ best beauty and hair looks are here to stay.

This year’s AAFW was a showcase of diverse beauty and incredible Australian talent, and with the easing of last year’s intense Covid restrictions, the Caviar Feeling team was fortunate enough to get backstage and speak with the hair and makeup artists behind some of our favourite looks.

Bondi Born: The Beach Goddess

In a twist on the natural beach day beauty, they’ve come to be known for, Bondi Born transformed their models into shimmering beach goddesses for their Monday show. Clarins, Head MUA, Anne Salem created flawless, dewy complexions with a Euphoria inspired pop of silver across the lids extending into the inner corners. “The goal”, she explains, “Is to make them look like angels coming out of the ocean drenched with water with eyes that glisten like the sun hitting the sea”.

To achieve this, Head Hair Stylist Renya Xydis relied on Wella’s Eimi collection to enhance the natural texture of each model for an individualised yet cohesive look. “The looks are very sporty and cool, minimal but done”, says Renya, “It’s a twist on the ‘it girl’ bun of the moment but with plaiting across the hairline and exposed ends; it’s dimensional, it’s textural, and it’s just really fun”.

Recreate the look yourself with Clarins’ SOS Primer, Skin Illusion Velvet Foundation, Fix’ Makeup spray and Eye Quartet Eye Shadow Pallet in Midnight, and Wella’s Ocean spritz, Glam mist and Mistify Me.

Indigenous Fashion Projects Runway: Beauty inspired by nature

Following the breakout success of their first show last year, the IFP Runway show returned to celebrate five of Australia’s leading First Nations designers – Kirrikin, Liandra Swim, Maara Collective, Native Swimwear and Ngali – And their vibrant collections. To tie each of the collections together, Hair and Makeup artists from Lancome and Redken drew inspiration from the Australian landscape itself, creating glossy wet-look hair and skin, windswept, natural curls and severe, sleek updos.

To recreate these looks, reach for Lancome’s Prep & Hydrate, Eclat Miracle highlighter, Advanced Genifique Serum, Teint Idole Ultra Wear Foundation, and Redken’s Shine Flash Glass Like Shine Spray, Triple Take Extreme Hold Hairspray and Stay High 18 High Gel to Mousse.

Karla Spetić: Underwater Glamour

While Bondi Born’s models were styled as if emerging from the waves, the models at Karla Spetic’s Resort ‘23 collection brought us beauty looks from beneath the sea’s surface. Central to this was a bright, dewy complexion, glossy, shiny nails, and wave swept hair. To prep the skin and ensure maximum glow, Science-backed Australian skincare brand Synergie Skin products were used in combination with subtle touches of Coral Colours Makeup. To replicate the shine and movement of wet hair, Artego Stylists saturated the hair with gel to mould it into loose tendrils before setting it with a diffuser and extra shine spray.

Recreate the look with Synergie Skin’s Vitamin B Serum, BioCleanse, ImprovEyes Day, DermaCalm and B-juvenate, Coral Colour Cosmetics’ Silk Finish Concealer, and Argetgo Hair’s Posh Pomade, Rock Me hair Gel and Shine Bright spray.

Torannce: Late Sixties Summer

Torannce transported us back to the dreamy late sixties with their whimsical collection, loose waves, full bangs and twiggy inspired eye makeup. Led by the inimitable Nicole Thompson, the show’s makeup artists paired a flawless base with caramel-coloured lips and dramatic eyes.

To achieve the exaggerated lower lash look made famous by twiggy, artists applied a liberal coat of Charlotte Tilbury’s Pillow Talk Push up Mascara before tweezing small sections of lashes together into points and adding liner beneath for a shadow effect. To round out the effortless cool-girl look of each model, the hair was left largely untouched by O&M Head Stylist, Richard Kavanagh – Those with straight hair were styled with gentle waves and those with curls had a few subtly enhanced with a small wand. Blunt faux bangs were seamlessly colour matched to each girl and piecily styled with lots of movement and texture.

Recreate the look with MAC Studio Fix Conceal and Correct Pallet, Mecca Max Pout Pop Lipstick in shade Plush, and O&M Atonic Thickening Spritz and Original Queenie Firm Hold Hairspray.

Gyre: Where the desert meets the sea

Inspired by the the salt swept hair texture and rosy cheeks of a day at the beach, and the rich red shades of the Australian desert, Gyre’s models took to the runway sporting coral lips and cheeks, and hair ranging from glossy wet looks to textured curls.

The skin was prepped with Weleda Skin Food to create a fresh, dewy base and concealer was used sparingly if at all. In place of highlighter, Papaw Ointment was used on the cheekbones, eyelids, and collarbones for a natural, light-reflecting shine and through the brows for a feathered look. Finally, Iron Ore hued cream lipsticks were blurred across the lips and cheeks for a pop of colour and Redken’s Shine Flash Glass-Like Shine Spray and Triple Take Extreme Hold Hairspray were brushed through the hair for a textured finish.
